This is about partnerships; of companies working together to leverage their strengths and capabilities to develop superior products using valuable resources otherwise destined for landfill.
Reconophalt is part of a new range of asphalt products supplied by Downer under its ‘Low CO2 Asphalt’ banner. The product is a collaboration between Melbourne company Close the Loop and Downer. CtL manufactures TonerPlas – an asphalt additive that is the key ingredient in Reconophalt. CtL is one of the world’s leading resource recovery companies focused on diverting waste from landfill. Downer is one of Australia’s largest and most progressive infrastructure companies, a top-tier producer of asphalt, builder and maintainer of roads.
TonerPlas is a polymer modified binder using waste soft plastics recovered from CtL’s partners, RedCycle and Plastic Police, while used toner is sourced from well-known programs such as Cartridges 4 Planet Ark and other manufacturer-sponsored cartridge collection programs.
CtL and Downer have formed an exclusive partnership to bring Reconophalt to market. Whilst over 1,000 kms of TonerPave (the pre-cursor to TonerPlas) have already been laid in Australia, the new Reconophalt version was first laid in Melbourne’s north on May 29, 2018. The event attracted interest from media, major road authorities as well as state and local governments, including the Victorian State Minister for Environment Lily D’Ambrosio who was in attendance and lauded the innovation and the importance of supporting the procurement of products containing recycled content.
